On March 25, Lil Nas X released the much anticipated video for his song, MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name), and it went instantly viral. The video features and unabashedly queer Nas, ending with the rapper giving a lap dance to the leather-clad devil, before he snaps Lucifer’s neck and claims his crown.

Following its release, the video has been met with love and support from the LGBTQ+ community, trending on Twitter and becoming the No. 1 trending video on YouTube.

There were of course the haters, who Nas had no patience for, clapping back at them with the savagery that he’s come to be known for.

Lil Nas X spoke out on Twitter hours after US District Judge Eric Komitee issued a temporary restraining order barring MSCHF — the art collective with whom the rapper-singer made the shoes.

  • One glance through Lil Nas X's social media — Twitter, TikTok, you name it — makes it evident that he grew up on the internet and knows how to use it. Alongside a video of Lil Nas X performing at an elementary school, one user wrote: “The system is targeting kids. Lil Nas X’s fanbase is mostly children. They did the same thing with Miley Cyrus after Hannah Montana.”

Lil Nas X then responded to the tweet, writing: “There was no system involved. I made the decision to create the music video. I am an adult. I am not gonna spend my entire career trying to cater to your children. That is your job.”

He kept the comebacks coming in response to another since-deleted tweet, which claimed that Lil Nas X’s display of his sexuality is “destroying society.”

“There is a mass shooting every week that our government does nothing to stop,” Lil Nas X wrote. “Me sliding down a CGI pole isn’t what’s destroying society.”
